Of course, another factor is that at the time, IBM
was trying to buy Sun and finally dropped out when
the price got too high. That kind of bidding
situation can get a price higher than you planned
to pay originally.

When they [MS] intervened in SCO vs IBM it was because they had a strategic need of the lawsuit [Vista was late and turned out to be a turkey] and because SCO represented no competition or threat to them.
And Windows for phones is so wonderful that it's flying off the shelves faster than Android...

Or to put it another way, in SCO vs IBM, Linux was a threat to MS; in this case Android is a threat to MS. SCO being totally destroyed in an attempt to destroy Linux is just collateral damage. Oracle (as a MS competitor) being destroyed in an attempt to destroy Android would certainly look good to MS - how many projects has MS destroyed [to get their technology] that would be/was in competition to them?
