AFAICT Google was toying with the notion of taking a license
during the 2005/6 negotiations, but, a JME & TCK license would
have been necessary to satisfy the handset makers and carriers
who wanted to see genuine Java(TM). The TCK and JME licenses
would have thwarted Google's ambition to release their code
under a non-Sun, non-GPL open source license.
Along came Harmony, and it was obvious that anyone could make
their own VM and supporting APIs and libraries, so long as they
didn't call it Java. Larry E seems a bit upset that he paid $7.4Bn
[disputed] for a filing cabinet.
