And lose Java?
Authored by: jjs on Thursday, April 19 2012 @ 06:11 AM EDT
Others have commented on the legal implications of a license on Java
specification. I'll limit it more to the business side. Assume this does
happen. Java is not only FAR from the only language out there, but in many
ways, a minor player, especially on the phones. Repoint Dalvik (cleaned up if
needed) to allow python/perl/ruby/c/c++/insert your favorite language here, and
presto, no more Java need, no more paying Oracle.

It's called killing the goose that lays the golden egg - and it's unfortunately
too common in US businesses. Let's monetize today, even if it kills the
business in a few years. That timeframe will be someone else's problem.

Exactly - (Oracle staff code only), fork JAVA down a proprietary road. Done before yep with NX.

FUD - Exactly - with developers (Oracle staff), fork JAVA back
down a proprietary road. How?

New code to be added, will have a new copyright license.

Where the old code is what it is, but the specification, requires
use of the new code, that is under the new "dual License, but
ironically under the more restrictive license.

This is exactly what has been done with the formerly open source
NX code, where No Machine (key developer of NX) decided to make
newer code fall under their more restrictive license (non-free is
then used to trap formerly free software users back into a "lock-
in" trap. This is exactly why I would never buy into a Microsoft
FREE license (were MS had all the developers).

When Google was playing with FREE NX I was hoping that they would
take it all the way and host a free fork of NX. Google could use
their massive server farm to then host remote access to Android
devices where a "terminal server" environment could exist (with a
data stream that was easier to maintain and secure).

Oracle, most likely, wants to OWN UNIX (oops, I mean JAVA). It's
all about that darn tree and the branches again.
