Larry Ellison -- Oracle OpenWorld - 10-5-2011 on Youtube.

Your comments are consistent with the tenor of Larry's presentation. Oracle has a lot of skin in the Java game and the world is moving fast. He just doesn't sound comfortable doing this presentation and that may be speaking volumes for the intense pressure that even the best IT businesses feel to stay relevant.

On The Value of Sun
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, April 18 2012 @ 12:51 AM EDT
The only reason to buy Sun, from the perspective of "control" of Java
is actually the overwhelming (and unfair) veto power Sun has on the JCP. Other
than that Oracle had no need for Sun. They already have their own set of
implementations of both the JVM and the class libraries. The language was free
to use. There's no shortage of Java experts around to employ. Like all the major
players who were using Java, Oracle was already in the JCP, influencing the
future direction of Java. From the perspective of controlling Java, when Oracle
bought Sun, it wasn't for controlling Java software (which they already owned
implementations of), or controlling the Java language (it's not that hard to
extend using their own class library), it was for almost absolute control of the
JCP.
