Actually, coming up with a good API is hard. It takes a lot of thinking about exactly what you're trying to do, and how developers will need to use your functions. I don't know how many times I've had to deal with bad APIs: ones where how the API wants things done is at right angles to how my program needs to do things and my code and the API are constantly at odds with each other.

But that's irrelevant to copyright. There's a lot of work that goes into typesetting and binding a book, creating cover art and so forth. But the fact that I've done all that work doesn't magically endow me with a copyright on your story.
