Notes:
Schwartz: Resurgence in Sun's business -
predicated upon network effect. As we bring more
of them online -- even if they are not using our
technology -- that drives greater oppy for Sun and
for others.
That's why open sourcing. New people. More people will exp. the Internet
through a java enabled phone than on a PC.
Java: On 8 out of 10 phones in the world.
How does Sun get to the next 4 billion devices?
It will drive more community - why open sourcing. To drive the network effect.
Rich Green: Some years ago said we'd open source all of Sun's software. And
we've delivered on our promise.
[lists]
Sun is the largest commercial contributor to the Open Source community.
Java SE is 6m lines of code
License: GPLv2
Why? Maximize adoption and distribution
Match with other programs
Compatibility - ensuring all the work can be shared uniformly, no running off
and hiding
Developers: adopt the qualities that appeal, the comfort level of developers.
Compatible with Linux, and therefor will drive network effect.
Introducing rms, mentioning The Java Trap: rms on video.
GPL is most popular license. It's copyleft. So freedom it offers reaches all
users. The Java Trap will not exist any more for Java. With this contribution,
Sun has contributed more software than any other company to the Free Software
Community.
Java.net is the home of all the software they will be making available.
One formal ceremony: code appears on screen. "Read the copyright."
GPL shows up.
Details. JavaSE will be released under the Open JDK COmmunity. Hotspot, the
core engine, Java
Pieces rolling out in the next few months.
To ensure this stuff is widely distributed as possible, part of the license will
be with the classpath exception.
JavaME GPL
Available now: GPLV2 all code for a feature phone, Java ME TCK framework
New community Mobile [long name]
CDC technology
Glassfish was released under CDDL last year.
Now dual licensed with GPLv2, with SDK
This is all about developers
OpenJDK project
Netbeans
This really is a dual licensed model. To all licensees.
Nothing changes. Everything is added.
Java Community Process Matters. JCP will continue.
jcp.org
[Video: industry comments. Tim O'Reilly. Marcelo Zuffo.
Paul Cormier. Eben Moglen: "Freely available knowledge" and very
pleased and flattered to see Sun taking its
valuable products and sharing under these rules, realizing that they will be
more valuable to Sun and to others if freely shared.]
One more surprise announcement: need a mascot.
Open sourcing of Duke, the image. Under BSD license.
Modifiable.
It is now all open
Start hacking it now
sun.com/opensource/java
netbeans.org
Opens for questions. Schwartz back to the platform. No questions. Are you all
stunned? Believe me Eben and Richard were also stunned when we called.
Volume equals value. Fundamental to software.
More innovation.
Free software can't be free, some company said last week.
You have to pay. -- Sun is unique in threading the needle, creating value for
open source community and for shareholders. The IP is clean and safe, owned by
Sun but now donated to the community.
And so if anyone says free software requires a royalty, they are lying? Yes.
Finally one question: will we open source TCKs?
Green: The real challenge is transparency.
And accepting from outsiders.
Schwartz: Not a small change. Spend billions every year in R&D.
Contributing so our products will improve.
Q: Given that the new Playstation is a JavaME device, is it true we'll all get
one?
Simon Phipps: IBM asked why not donate the code to Harmony?
Schwartz: We consulted with a great many. IBM is free to do whatever they want
with their IP. This is ours. Curious they would take that position regarding
the GPL.
Green: TO be fair, there is no perfect choice. We chose what is best for Java
and best for the community.
Schwartz: This is a rising tide (see my blog later today). I understand this
puts a threat to traditional business models. They are fighting freedom.
Phipps: Gnome and Classpath communities say thank you.
Schwartz: Now is the time to get together and avoid redundancy. Want to drive
freedom for developers. There is no one hammer for all nails in the
marketplace.
Q: First, thank you. Re digital divide, it's a good condition for undeveloped
countries to participate. Sun has an opportunity to be a leader. I have seen
Microsoft suing
small companies for hacking. You are saying, do not hack but use it.
Schwartz: Our position is not to spend our time sue developers or killing
competitors. Technology has become a social utility. The Pres. of Brazil
asked why we are helping
Brazilians, give it away? I described our business. Oh, I understand. You are a
company that builds radio towers, and you want to give everybody a radio.
It is great for society and great for business.
We will open source all of the technology we have.
We chose a license that was the right one for Solaris, CDDL.
They'll take a look at maybe changing the license.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
