Rating system
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, April 17 2012 @ 03:45 PM EDT
There was already a discussion about rating systems in the last article (Plus 5 Mod Up -- Funny)

I actually don't care about filtering any messages, but would like to thank some contributors.

IMO it would be enough to have a thanks counter (maybe even only visible to the author).

pj mentioned that he wouldn't mind (A rating system not like Slashdot's) and I was wondering if the Rating plugin for geeklog couldn't be used for this.

working class libraries
Authored by: IMANAL_TOO on Tuesday, April 17 2012 @ 04:10 PM EDT
The working class library article at www.libr.org/isc/arti cles/20-Pateman-1.html must be the most offtopic article about working class libraries I have googled.

Apologies, but I couldn't resist.

RFP: $10 Billion dollar research grant
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, April 17 2012 @ 04:43 PM EDT
(just in case: RFP=Request For Proposal)

I wish.

No there isn't $10 Billion up for grabs, but that's just 2 years of innovation
or R&D 'according to Larry'

Larry E that is not, Larry P

What would/could you do?

Keep in mind your goal should be:-

"To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts"

So buying a small Caribbean island and moving your family out of the rat race
isn't a good answer.

Just to start, here's a two step program...

first Short Oracle
then Cure world hunger with the proceeds

(should we have a 5 year category, $25 Billion?)

Open source to help keep them honest in science and not just the courts.

A diverse group of academic research scientists from across the U.S. have written a policy paper which has been published in the journal Science, suggesting that the time has come for all science journals to begin requiring computer source code be made available as a condition of publication. Currently, they say, only three of the top twenty journals do so.

MS Nokia SciFi

<tinfoil hat>
I suspect MS is Nokia's destroyer then savior by purchasing them within the next
two years. MS's 5-10 year plan is to create a worldwide mobile infrastructure
which will include MS produced BIOS locked mobile devices, worldwide phone (call
from anywhere) connection - using Nokia and Siemens plans to create a satellite
based mobile service. The final piece is a social network site, though in it's
early stages will be the partnership, control and then purchase of Facebook. The
next step in the Facebook acquisition plans will be to get former MS execs on
the Facebook BOD using shareholder shills.

Science fiction - from under the bridge.
