If Oracle were to win on the API being non-free, then Java
would split; as a company & a developer, you can't base
anything on a language technology you can't trust to have a
future. And Oracle would have just shown that it was
necessary for at least FOSS developers who use Java to
create
an entirely different set of incompatible APIs. We know how
that story will turn out - not that well for Oracle; let's
see them trying to make their software interoperate with
other Java language-based software which uses an
incompatible
String API and a GPL3 licence.
