Change isn't necessarily good or bad. I liked KDE4 from the start. More
recently, after seeing how great Unity looks, I tried it only to find that looks
aren't everything. So, I'm back to KDE4 and E17.
To get back to the original thread, though, and getting a bit closer to Java, is
my issue with interactions between desktop managers and Java. Even with a
current hardware setup, system lag is sensitive to desktop manager when running
two Java applications concurrently: Minecraft server and Minecraft client.
GNOME just doesn't cut it, and neither does Unity. With KDE, there is some
noticeable effect, but it's manageable. XFCE and E17 run with no lag, although
IceWM has about as much lag as KDE. I can't comment on Windows because I
haven't run both the client and the server on the same PC.
To me, this says a lot about the desktop managers and more about Java. Just
because we have 4 cores or 8 GB of RAM, memory management still matters. Java
reminds me of the old BASIC in that it's easy to jump in and do something, but
it doesn't have the memory management capabilities for an efficient large
project.
