In the aw, shucks department - Groklaw recognized again ~pj
Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 03:06 PM EST

The ABA Journal will announce it in their February issue, but I've just been told that Groklaw has "earned the most votes from readers in the ABA Journal Blawg 100's Legal Technology category". Groklaw members who were watching all the vote totals told me we had more votes than any other legal blog in *any* category, actually. The ABA sent me a badge to display.

Half of the one million lawyers in the US read the ABA Journal every month, they say, so lots of new lawyers are likely to stop by now. So behave yourselves.

Nah. Just be yourself, actually. They're lawyers. They've seen it all. More than once, probably. To any new readers, welcome. If you have tech questions, Groklaw is a resource for you.

Here's the ABA badge:

I also heard from Barry B. Sookman, an attorney, who has posted his list of the ten most popular intellectual property and technology blogs' RSS feeds, and he writes: "The world’s most popular legal IP/IT news picks blog is Groklaw NewsPicks." Of course, that's measuring the RSS feeds, not visitors to the site. And Groklaw doesn't automatically add you to the feed if you click on links on our site, as I've heard some others do.

: )

Since many of you send me links to articles of interest to put in News Picks, I'll take this opportunity to thank you, since I don't always have enough time to thank all of you personally.

[ Update: Indeed we did get the most votes, which means if they'd put up in the IP category or the News/Analysis category, Groklaw still would have won as fan favorite. Here are the winners in all the categories.]

I personally was unware that some sites are using the tactic to automatically add me to news feeds if I click on their links.

As a result: Mucho Mucho thanks for not doing the same. I'm an almost daily visiter (probably somewhere around 360 or so days of the year) and read almost every article (I think there's a couple I choose not to read since I started regularly visiting back in (I think) 2003. I wasn't here for the begining, but very close I think (vague recollection).

However, I choose not to have RSS feeds.

So huge thanks for respecting my choice! And Yes, I do have a login but rarely ever actually use it anymore so I know this anonymous post would present a technical problem of giving me a feed but still have an active account that is used and I don't get feeds from that.

Of course, the above should not be construed as a distraction from your excellently laid out and posted articles. I espectially like the fact you provide a service that most reportings don't: links to the actual sources so I can review the situation myself. That's worth my own weight (far too heavy for healthy ;) ) in gold.

It's too bad main media can't understand there are those of us who value that over their preferred senational journalism (yellow journalism I believe was the 80's term). But I guess they make more profit off the sensational rather then the factual.

So a tremendous thanks for presenting the factual as well!

PJ You're A LADY!
Authored by: lnuss on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 03:43 PM EST
When I was growing up, and certainly for many years before that, the term
"lady" applied to a woman indicated high standards of behavior, among
other things (and disregarding any royalty connotations).

Although so many people today use that term as a synonym for woman, all I've
seen of you on this site over the years tells me that you very strongly deserve
that title in the old-fashioned sense -- congratulations on the awards, Lady
PJ.

Let me also say welcome to any new lawyer-readers
Authored by: designerfx on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 03:43 PM EST
It's always great to have professional lawyers openly
discussing things for people to gain better understanding and
appreciation of the law.

Let's hope this means more (and additionally, other
interesting) guest blogposts as well!

A million lawyers?
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 05:23 PM EST
That's one lawyer for every 300 Americans. To me that seems
like a lot, maybe too many. At what point, how many lawyers
and how many laws, will the American legal system collapse
under its own weight?

Congratulations PJ (and MW too :P)!!

I (and many others) were very passionate about getting readers to vote for GL
because I believed that more people need to be aware of it.

I have learned sooo much in the many years I have read the articles on this
site, and I want many other people to benefit as well.

Thanks again PJ for all you do.

Received votes means they already read

Think about it. If they were receiving votes then those voting are likely
already reading Groklaw.

As a long time reader, I would like to say congratulations. You have truly
earned the respect of both the Open Source and Legal communities.

I have read your articles (sometimes word for word even), and you never wavered
in digging for and telling the truth (sometimes even when it went against your
own opinions of the cases). Even when SCO heated things up by sending their
attack dog after you (MOG), you never backed down. Nor did you ever stoop to
their levels (which at times made Larry Flint look like a choir boy).

You are a true lady, and I'm glad you are there. Take a bow.

Timely Recognition
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, January 04 2013 @ 08:26 AM EST
Congrats. And this was a timely kick up the backside to me to
get around to making a donation. I pay to read a newspaper
each day and I don't see why I shouldn't pay to read - and to
get educated by - your site.

Barry B. Sookman?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, January 04 2013 @ 10:08 AM EST

Not a good recommendation. He has a terrible reputation in Canada, due to
his acting as a lobbyist for the Canadian Recoding Industry Association,
aka Music Canada.

Barry and I have had a few scuffles. He tends to post some really
inaccurate stuff on his blog, and I have this terrible tendency of pointing out

his mistakes. He also has been caught writing Op-Ed pieces for the
newspapers, and not declaring his interest in he issue.

I'm not saying he's involved in anything illegal, I'm just questioning the
moral stance he has taken at times.

Without your efforts I doubt that we would have got as many votes as we did.

I voted.....shame about the other 20000.
