We'll be offline for a bit tomorrow - Update: We're back |
|

We're moving to new servers in the morning, so we will be offline tomorrow for a few hours at least and maybe longer if there are issues. So don't panic if that happens. I'll be in panic mode myself, of course, being me, and because things like this are stressful. But we've tested it as much as we can, so now there's nothing more to do but take the plunge, and so tomorrow it is, at around 9 AM, North Carolina time. We'll see you afterwards, probably around noon, and after that please let us know any issues you notice.
Update: We're up. Post in your comments any issues you notice, please. But so far, so good.
I need a nap.

Worse comes to worse, is there a backup twitter/FB account to follow if the site
goes down longer than expected? Not so much for law news, but just to keep
apprised of progress/status on the migration if something should foul up?[ Reply to This | # ]

I'm assuming that this is 9am Eastern.
For the many readers around the world, you may have to adjust your sets....(pun
intended)
WET = 15:00
GMT = 14:00
Pacific = 06:00
etc

The time referred to is a particular
instant. It is the same instant for everyone. Civil time everywhere is based on
UTC. As it is people have to ask: what time zone is Eastern Time in, is daylight
saving in operation, what time zone am I in, is daylight saving in operation?
I.E. you first have to convert to UTC and then convert to local time. If the
time was UTC to start with, the job would be half done.
Americans did a
great job with 100cents to the dollar, but things have gone downhill ever
since.

Stuff happens and we'll be here when you're back up, probably with an attack of
the DT's from having to go cold turkey, but it'll be good for us:-)[ Reply to This | # ]

Everything appears to be working, so I guess the upgrade was a success?

It's part of my morning routine, I clicked then when I saw the unavailable
message remembered, "down till noon".

Step 1 make sure your DNS is set right
You have an A record for oldserver.groklaw.net
You have an a record for newserver.groklaw.net
www.groklaw.net is a CNAME for oldserver
TTL is about 1 day
Step 2, couple of days before the move, wind the TTL down to 15 minutes
Step 3, ready to go? .. here we go ... either:
drop a permanent redirect into the oldserver apache conf
or
drop a proxy forward into the oldserver apache conf
Step 4 update the CNAME in your DNS to point to newserver
job done. seamless.
for step3 you can just swap the database connection so old server uses the
database on newserver for a while, it will be a little slower than normal, but
the load should clear in 15 minutes of the DNS change ... or you can even wind
the DNS shorter for a while if you want

It's much faster here in Australia.
The old server, for some reason, was slower to respond. Perhaps there was some
BGP madness, making us use a slower link.[ Reply to This | # ]

The old RSS feed no longer works for me after the change (404 error). I deleted
it and started over, copying and pasting the URL posted at the bottom of the
Groklaw home page, but I get the following XML error:
The URL you want
Liferea to subscribe to points to a webpage and the auto discovery found no
feeds on this page. Maybe this webpage just does not support feed auto
discovery.Source points to HTML document.
