Hearing on Sale of SCO's Java Patent April 20th
Friday, April 16 2010 @ 09:08 PM EDT

The SCO bankruptcy hearing on the sale of the Java patent will be on April 20. That's this proposed sale to Liberty Lane for $100,000, and that's an LLC affiliated with Allied Security Trust, the anti-patent-trolls company, if you've dropped a stitch and can't keep up as SCO's assets get sold off bit by bit. If anyone else has bid, other than Liberty Lane, then there would be an auction on the 19th, but SCO told the court they don't expect that to happen.

Here is the Notice regarding what will be heard on the 20th:
1107 - Filed & Entered: 04/16/2010
Notice of Matters Scheduled for Hearing (B)
Docket Text: Notice of Agenda of Matters Scheduled for Hearing Filed by Edward N. Cahn, Chapter 11 Trustee for The SCO Group, Inc., et al.. Hearing scheduled for 4/20/2010 at 04:00 PM at US Bankruptcy Court, 824 Market St., 6th Fl., Courtroom #3, Wilmington, Delaware. (Fatell, Bonnie)

1108 - Filed & Entered: 04/16/2010
Certification of Counsel
Docket Text: Certification of Counsel Regarding Omnibus Hearing Dates Filed by Edward N. Cahn, Chapter 11 Trustee for The SCO Group, Inc., et al.. (Fatell, Bonnie)

The second document is just the list from the court of the next dates set aside for SCO omnibus hearings. Sigh. The winding down of SCO, as we await the next chapter in what will be, no doubt, another fascinating chapter of the apparently eternal SCO litigation saga.

Hearing on Sale of the SCO's Java Patent April 20th

Wouldn't any patent around JAVA be obvious, as in no real invention...? Kinda
like that combination of devices (already invented) in the case that the Supreme
Court came up with the "obvious" ruling?

Are they really an anti-patent-troll company?

an LLC affiliated with Allied Security Trust, the anti-patent-trolls company
It appears that this company buys up patents for its member companies, gives them non-exclusive rights (and non-revocable, I would assume) to the patent, and then at some point puts the patent back out on the market for sale.

If this is true, FOSS could be in the sights of whatever entity purchases the patent from AST. From what I read, the only ones who have ongoing rights are the member companies that participated when AST purchased the patent.

Maybe I just misunderstood what I read, though. So... those that might have more info or a better understanding, please enlighten me...

Hearing on Sale of SCO's Java Patent April 20th

The winding down of SCO, as we await the next chapter in what will be, no doubt, another fascinating chapter of the apparently eternal SCO litigation saga.

It's rather infuriating that Cahn's activities as the trustee of SCO in "chapter 11" have essentially boiled down to "spend millions of dollars on lawyers," "take a questionable loan from an insider," and "start liquidating the estate."

The creditors and shareholders would have been far better served by going straight to Chapter 7. In a sane world, both Gross and Cahn would be forced to account for their actions.
