Best FUD Fighter: And the winner is... me!
Wednesday, July 25 2007 @ 03:07 PM EDT

The five winners of this year's Google-O'Reilly Open Source Awards were announced last night at OSCON, and I am one of the winners, as "Best FUD Fighter". I love that. Best FUD Fighter.

We have *got* to do a new T shirt, methinks.

It means I get to be listed in the Hall of Fame page. "The Google-O'Reilly Open Source Awards have been presented to individuals for dedication, innovation, leadership and outstanding contribution to open source." This feels so good. It's truly a wonderful thing to know that work you love doing is in fact appreciated by the very people you wish to please the most.

So thank you so much for this honor, Google and O'Reilly committee members. It is very meaningful to me. This was the first year they had an open submissions process, so perhaps I should also thank whoever thought of me. It could even be one of you. Of course, Groklaw isn't just me. If it were, it'd be very different, and so I want to thank all of you who have contributed -- and continue to contribute through thick and thin, year after year -- to this sustained community effort.

I knew we could do this. I just knew. Thank you for making the dream come true. O'Reilly has the news up now too. They call our work "tremendous". Thank you. OSCON is still live by the way, and we will be having reports for you as time goes by.

Here's the first

It should be "the winner is I", (strictly speaking of course ;-) ).

Congrats PJ- ok that's enough time for that, now back to work, SCO, Patents, Standards need us.

Congrats PJ -... if you want to take time off for a parade down main street...
ok, as we all know, you deserve it.

PS - SCOx, Standards, GPLv3, more FUD, SW Patents still are challenges ahead.

I'm glad to be one of the first to post my congratulatory message here knowing
that I helped! I'm proud to see an award like this happen to PJ and Groklaw and
very proud that I had a small part in it all.

Time to get the schnapps out and hoist a quick shot to PJ and everyone else who
made this possible.

SCENE OPENS IN A MARBLE HALLWAY.

PJ: "Mr. McBride, drop the lawsuit and step away from the courtroom. Your accusations are baseless and without merit."

DMB: "Curses! Foiled again!!"

1st CITIZEN: "Who was that masked woman, armed only with legal knowledge and a website?"

2nd CITIZEN: "That was Pamela Jones, FUDFighter!"

3rd CITIZEN: "No one knows anything else about her."

2nd CITIZEN: "She fights FUD. That's all we need to know."

I think the title is very well deserved indeed. The key to it all of course is accuracy, integrity and hard work, the things that make Groklaw special.

I expect the trolls will not be too happy. But who cares about them....

If its one with "the committee of IBM lawyers" all stuffed in the same red dress up on stage accepting the “2007 OSCON award for best FUD fighter" then I'll definitely buy one. I know, thats a crazy idea. I would not expect many outsiders to understand that joke, just those of us who can't live and breathe without this website. Way to go PJ!

I've been watching the NPR series about "Faces" hosted by John Cleese.
Sounds like an anomaly here. According to their presentation, because of TV
and other modern media, one's face must be instantly recognizable to be famous.
Looks like PJ has achieved fame while being incognito!

My hearty congratulations on the award, PJ. And someday I'd like to see a face
to go with the name, too.

      You know you are right
And PJ's the pick of the crop.
      Fudspreaders beware
      You better take take
      PJ will finish on top.
      O'Reilly have said it
      And Google will spread it
      PJ is a fudfighting champ
      The awards she has won
      Since Groklaw begun
Show that PJ's the queen of our camp
      SCO won't be amused
That we all know they used
Fudspreading to boost up their stock
      'Til a red dressing lady
Showed the world they were shady
And gave their shaky foundations a knock
      The truths she is spreading
      The Fudsters are dreading
These days truth gets its boots on much faster
      Monopolists lies
      Have now lost their disguise
Lets hope the spreaders soon have a disaster
      And to PJ "All Hail"
      Your project can't fail
You have the backing of too many heroes
      We'll follow your lead
      To smash corporate greed
And reduce liars and cheaters to zero!

      An aside
Authored by: cricketjeff on Thursday, July 26 2007 @ 06:27 AM EDT
I haven't checked in detail but I think PJ is the first female winner of one of
these awards. A reflection presumably of the sadly male dominated state of our
      profession.
I don't actually believe in such things but I hope PJ is a role model that shows
that we aren't male dominated by choice, we welcome all comers, all ages,
genders, preferences, and if any little green men (or women) are looking in all
      species!

I've been in the computer business longer than most, including BillG.

FUD stands for (and always has) Fear, Uncertainty, and Deception.

Doubt is handled under uncertainty and is redundant in the "newspin
      politically correct" "Doubt" interpretation.
