All the news on Groklaw for the last few days have been about Microsoft and its
patent stance towards Linux.
Hallelujah, I'm Microsoft free.

OK - I'll come out into the open - I admit it - I am adicted to Groklaw
It
started off as an innocent enough vocation, every other day or so wondering off
to the site, looking at it in small doses, I never thought anything ot if rally.
I did not see how it could be harmful.
Before I knew it I was spending
hours in front of my browser minutely eamining every inuendo of arguments and
points of view. I found I wanted more. It was taking over my life.
I
suppose a turing point was when I contributed!
When PJ had her well
deserved vacation the other month, I mean, Mathfox was a good substitute for
her, but non the less I had tremors! I was even having difficulty holding the
mouse still to click the appropriate bit! I was desparate!
I thought I may
be able to dry out when the SCO thingy was sorted, but now we have the Microsoft
injection.
I need help! Tell me, is that what Groklaw Anonymous is
about?

Hi --
Three years ago, while doing some graphic design, I happened to be searching for
web graphics which looked like those produced by artists such as Mackintosh,
Moser and others in the Viennese Secession. One of the pictures cast up by
Google Images was the little graphic which appeared at top-right on the home
page of something called Groklaw.
I spent a few minutes, checking out the page, bookmarked it, then left. A month
or so later, I happened to click back, and this time read the first couple of
stories. A few days later, I came back for another look. (My original degree is
in computing, and I'm a long-time Unix user.)
Spin forward to today, and rarely a day goes by without my checking the site for
new information. It's been an amazing few years, and the sheer depth of
discussion has been wonderful to behold.
[Part of it, I have to admit, is that -- just like in a film -- we're getting
near to the final reel (at least in _this_ particular film...), and there's a
palpable feeling of expectation in the air. After all, baddies always get their
comeuppance in the movies...]
This is an extraordinary site: all the more so, having been run by one person
(tales of IBM lawyer gestalt organisms notwithstanding). It's rare to come
across something which is likely to have altered events and perceptions (or at
least one which isn't driven by the interests of faceless corporate
juggernauts), and may play a part in shaping (or commenting on) the future of
software design and delivery.
And of course we now know what the sequel's going to be.
Here's looking forward to another four years..... it's going to be fun.
Cheers (and congratulations), from a dedicated lurker,
Peter

Congratulations on Groklaw's 4th birthday, and thank you PJ for all your hard
work.
Since you mentioned that Microsoft has given us something new to do, perhaps we
should try to review as many of Microsoft's patents as possible. I suspect that
Groklaw has enough readers to give all of them at least a quick look in a few
weeks. Is there some way that Groklaw could help coordinate such an effort?

Happy Anniversary and more importantly, thanks very much to PJ and the regular
Groklaw contributers!
I am not a lawyer, but a tech head. I found your site back when the SCO/IBM
case came out and have been following ever since.
Thanks very much for providing insight on the legal workings and angles I just
never seem to grasp! Groklaw is not about anti-this, or pro-that which I
greatly appreciate it. (Even though it's there sometimes and I enjoy that too.)
Without this site, I'd still know a brief as something purchased in a clothing
store, and think that pro bono had something to do with an early 70s musical
act.
Thanks for opening my eyes to so many things! I wish you many more years of
success, and hope that I can continue learn from PJ and other kind
contributors.

This site will be used by law schools for years to come.
In the matter of the SCO litigation, how many other law cases, with a similar
amount of complexity, have such a large number of court documents converted into
digital form? Not to mention all of the hyperlinks for navigating from one
document to another.
I think the answer is few, if any.

Happy Birthday Groklaw
You're four years old today
All thanks to a
firm called TSG
And a lady called PJ
TSG thought that they'd get
rich
Claiming someone else's money
PJ thought she'd take a look
In
case they did something funny
And as the case has dawdled on
PJ's
site has bloomed
TSG's business has nearly gone
Now surely they are
doomed
Groklawyers will be pleased to know
That PJ says she'll
stay
To report on other naughty chaps
Who think they'll win the
day
So Microsoft and patent schills
Better plan ahead with
care
A lady on a mission
May just get in their hair!
Thanks
for all your hard work PJ not much of a poem but it's all
yours!

Happy Anniversary indeed!
Has anyone else noticed how similar "happy
anniversary" and "happy in adversity" sound?
Anyway, it now feels like
the much anticipated patent wars are looming close. Very close. But, at the
same time, I suspect Microsoft won't actually launch any actual lawsuits. It's
more like a cold war, with posturing, propaganda, proxy wars, and the
like.
Groovy!

SCO will probably take 5. Microsoft can easily double that time. I am also
looking forward to the google litigation. What I have decided the difference
between open source and MS is that open source is in it for primarily the love
of the code. MS is just wanting to make money. Its too bad regular consumers
can't see that as clear.[ Reply to This | # ]

I stumbled across Groklaw as I was trying to resolve various difficulties
arising from an "upgrade" (PHAH!) to XP on my PIII. I was
contemplating my alternatives and reading up on Linux.
As a result of this blog, as well as many others out there, I decided to give
Linux a try.
I now only use Windows when I do my tax return. I don't like putting personal
information of THAT nature with an on-line tax preparation program, and nobody
makes tax prep software for Linux.

In response to MS patent litigation strategy Jonathan Schwartz,CEO of Sun,
writes in his blog:
"We were invited by one company to sue the beneficiaries of open source. We
declined. We could join another and sue our customers. That seemed suicidal. We
were offered the choice to scuttle Solaris, and resell someone else's operating
system. We declined.
Wow, does this mean what I think it does!

In December of 2002, my wife gave birth to twins. I was working for a
now-defunct startup, whose product was based entirely on FOSS code.
Later, in 2003, I first read an article on slashdot about SCO's assertion of its
IP "rights." I took SCO's challenge personally. Here was a direct
threat to my new family's bread and butter.
Naturally, when slashdot linked to groklaw, I had to go read it so that I could
understand what, if anything, was going to happen to my career. I was instantly
addicted :-). I think I've posted to groklaw maybe twice in all that time, but I
read it many times a day.
Today, my kids are four and a half, and I'm still working with linux and FOSS
(although at a different company). Sadly, the SCO case is still grinding on,
but, luckily, groklaw is still here too, to keep us informed.
Congratulations, PJ! [ Reply to This | # ]

OK, recently I purchased "Piano Man: The Very best of" Billy Joel from
allofmp3.com (aka mp3sparks.com).
Now, can anybody here or at RIAA tell me
where I can pay the album author?
I here that author's take per album is
about 1% to 2%, $00.38 to $00.76.
I'm ready to pay my 7 Pieces of
8.
Please tell me where, or sue me for $00.75. Billy Joel deserves it.
Please sue me now for $00.75. Please, RIAA.
Here I stand, admitted for
you. --- "Fat operating systems spend most of their energy supporting

First of all Happy Birthday Groklaw :)
Secondly if it wasn't for
SCO/Groklaw I probably wouldn't have switched to OSS. I had Windows at home,
Windows at work (still do, but hey if Windows wasn't so bad I would be out of a
job supporting it ;) ) and I remember the first SCO lawsuits. I didn't know
much about the history of UNIX back then or indeed Linux but I do remember
thinking at the time "$5 Billion dollars... are they mad?" and as I spent
more time on Groklaw I learnt a lot about the US Justice system and how much
full of crack SCO are.
And as things progressed and I saw so many
people happily running Linux here I thought I'd try it (think this was back in
2004), using Debian and it went a bit wrong. Installation was a pig, got it
working but couldn't get on the net, gave up. Then after a while tried again
and gave Linspire a go, I know PJ isn't a fan of them but it was just what I
needed to get me on the "Linux Ladder" as it was so easy to set up and use. And
now I change Distro's about once a month to see what's out there and have a
little play :)
So thanks to SCO and Groklaw Microsoft are £300 poorer
as I havn't bought Microsoft Vista for my home PC and I am happily running Linux
(rPath this week) instead. Well apart from the fact I owe SCO $699 ;)

Please don't expect any anniversary gifts...
Although if Judge Kimbell reads this, a small PSJ or SJ judgement or three
against SCO(et al) would be appreciated.

No anniversary without a cake - and I think the best one for this occasion (or
any other occasion I can think of) is the Open Source cake, which has almost
biblical properties: the more it's shared, the bigger and better it gets, and
the more everyone can have :-)

PJ,
One of the other posters said they're not much of a joiner - I'd agree with
him except that it means we're part of the same group...
Anyhoo, congrats on your dissection of the FUD around SCO. I really really hate
bullies and SCOcrosoft's behaviour has been bullying of the highest order.
More importantly though...
PJ - I really liked your site when it stuck to legal matters, so I'm quite
disappointed that you've started commentary on birthdays. No wonder people are
leaving shorter messages. (tra la tra la... I don't get to troll very often, so
apologies for the lack of expertise!

I don't need to re-iterate the sentiments of others. Great stuff, yup!
Off
Topic....
VIACOM vs YT
Call me slow or whatever but I think I just realized
why Viacom is so afraid of YouTube.
I get far more "entertainment" or
"edutainment" value from the few YT snips I have seen than 45 minutes of some
Viacom episode or 120 minute flick.
Once people start realizing that,
GAME-OVER viacom.
I would have never dreamed of this 3 years ago when I first
heard of YT. I'm about as slow as molasses.
Here we have in one corner,
bloatware HD-DVD - high quality pictures, sanitized content, while in the other
corner we have pure fun - in 2 minutes you have made your point. Which one do
you think will win. DUH!
Viacom is not trying to assert their copyright,
they're trying to kill a format they can never compete with. They're know
they're dead already ! Fascinating.
There is nothing that Viacom can compete
with here. They can't support their current business model. The only thing
they can do is legislate YT out of existence.

Happy Anniversary!
..20 minutes of the best fireworks you have ever seen...
Thank you PJ, and fellow Grokkers!
This too is my most visited website and reading/learning experience outside of

PJ and Groklaw continue to drive me to the idea that after enough of
architecting business & systems, I'll head towards helping to
"architect" the civil space we live in. Maybe that a law degree is
next.
Thank you all!

Congratulations, and do you think that the first preliminary
final ruling will appear by the time Groklaw is five?
I have been at a loss for some time understanding how SCO
manages to get the judges to accept yet more delays. I can
see why it is critical for SCO to do so, as a ruling against
it on the current motions would send its share price negative,
but how on earth does it manage it?
Yours,
Baffled.

While I was nearly asleep last night, the thought came wandering by: Groklaw
needs a song. Ok, self, what would it be, I asked myself. The answer was
immediate. I'm having serious difficulty envisioning PJ as Gary Cooper in a
red dress, but it was otherwise obvious.
Salty Darl was tryin' to
stuff Sweet Linux in a burlap sack
