Darl, Bill and Tux -- The Cartoon
Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 04:37 AM EST

Wow. Something I wrote has inspired a cartoon. It would be hard to express what fun that is and how pleasant it feels. What I wrote was the following:
Linux runs on everything, dudes, from watches to supercomputers, which is just one reason why SCO made a life-altering mistake when it dropped Linux and chose to ride off into the sunset on its crippled Unix donkey.

There's a little story before I show you the drawing. You might even call it a parable.

I found out about the drawing when I got the following email from Ah Pook:

Greetings! I'm a long-time reader, and I've enjoyed following along from beginning to (please say it's the) end as SCO sinks into the morass of their own making. You posted a story a couple of weeks ago, with one of the funniest lines I've read in quite some time. It was quite evocative, and my complete lack of drawing ability combined with the fact that the world needs morasses led me to contact an illustrator friend. He's actually an accomplished Haida artist, but I think his caricatures are fantastic too. I explained the whole situation in 25 words or less, *cough*, sent him some Google Images of Darl and Bill, and he whipped up a nice little cartoon. OK, there's the thousand words.

:-)

Here's the picture:

Darl McBride, Bill Gates, and Tux

Inspired by a post from PJ over at Groklaw:

Linux runs on everything, dudes, from watches to supercomputers, which is just one reason why SCO made a life-altering mistake when it dropped Linux and chose to ride off into the sunset on its crippled Unix donkey.

Darl, Bill & Tux
Darl McBride, Bill Gates & Tux

Postscript: His email continued:

If you're curious (and it's funny too, but in a different way), here's the original KPaint sketch I sent to describe my vision: the sketch.

Now you know why cartoonists should be paid.

I just love doing Groklaw. What readers think to do that I'd never ever come up with... that's the greatest enjoyment. Here's a bit of info about the talented artist, Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, an article in the Vancouver Sun in 2003 about his work, and some of his works.

Of course, if I was a half-wit, I'd sue him for stealing my ideas, methods and concepts. But being a brainiac, I understand that creativity, innovation and progress comes from building on the ideas of others. It's how creativity works.

Yes. A little parable.

Darl, Bill and Tux -- The Cartoon
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 07:17 AM EST
The cartoon and storyline behind this entire article represent a complete
justification for not having or allowing patents of intangibles like IP or
software. Software creation is as much an art as it is a science. And, if
software developers weren't able to build on other's ideas I'd venture to say
that computers and the driving software wouldn't be where they are today.
It simply isn't right to enable a system that restricts creative expression by
forcing individuals to license an idea or concept because an individual or
corporation got to the PTO first. If we consider history we can see that the
greatest minds from the past and present have all built upon the ideas of their
predecessors, without paying a royalty for the thoughts.

Mistake?
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 07:54 AM EST
When Darl took over scox, scox's market cap was under $6M, now scox's market cap
is over $80M. Darl is now making over $1M a year. Riamondi made a small fortune
selling his shares in the high teens. I think msft got it's FUD value.

I think we all know that these crimminals will never be punished.

From scox's point of view, it doesn't seem like much of a mistake.

Darl - Harry Potter

Is that a Harry Potter scar on Darl's forehead? Will he cast a spell and
magically cause SCO to prevail?

Somthing I liked about the original that was left off the more polished version,
was the direction Darl and Bill are facing. Personally, I think that speaks
volumns, at least another thousand words.

Darl, Bill and Tux -- The Cartoon - Art as definition
Authored by: Thomas Downing on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 08:38 AM EST

Wow.

This picture is far more than a mere thousand words. It defines the whole morass. Thanks to Ah Pook, Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, and as always, PJ. It is crisis time where I work, so the joy of this cartoon came at as wonderful surprise to start my day.

It also defines the cliche, 'priceless...'

Well, I hope this doesn't send the whole UNIX/Windows world rioting in the
streets over the caricatures of its holy icons!

Of course we need to communicate -- that goes without saying!

Donkey, or mule?
Authored by: RealProgrammer on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 09:58 AM EST
I notice that that donkey looks a bit like a mule.

Sort of odd seeing eunuchs on a site dedicated to unix.

From the bottom for a donkey lover's heart, even a broken down, old, used up
donkey is still more noble of a beast than to be represented as an icon for
anything tSCOg.

Fortunately, the donkey in the cartoon doesn't look like he's have a good time.

Darl, Bill and Tux -- The Cartoon
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 10:26 AM EST
When I think about the quote, I get the image of Tux in the foreground playing
with all sorts of gadgets, all labled as power by Linux. And in the back ground
there is Mike, Darl, and Yarro pushing/pulling this old, stubborn, swayback mule
towards the horizon (which happens to be a desert(and the reason the Unix-mule
doesn't want to go)). Past the horizon is the sunset, with a huge sun labled
IBM baking down on tSCOg's caravan of fools.

I like this cartoon, but it has one fatal flaw. There is no sunset and without
explaination of some sort, the cartoon won't translate into the quote at all.

Darl, Bill and Tux -- The Cartoon
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 01:12 PM EST
Great cartoon, but it doesn't quite capture the spirit of the SCO lawsuit.

It should have Darl atop a donkey with a "slow moving vehicle" warning
triangle,
being guided by Bill to make sure that the fast-moving Linux car is
trapped in traffic.

Why is Bill Gates in this cartoon?

The real Bill Gates isn't riding any worn-out Unix donkey.

Conference call
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 05:32 PM EST
I didn't listen too much to the financial side, but one thing that was mentioned
did stick out:
Apparently one of the companies they sold SCO OpenServer to went from taking 16
hours for processing w/W2k3 to something like 10 minutes w/ OpenServer. They
also claim that from having talked to customers, this is the norm, and they will
be promoting their reliability in the future.

There were only two questions during Q&A.
The first one was about $1.75 million that they have in escrow. The answer was
that it covers all the expenses for the lawyers and experts (costs such as
travel); the final payment for the cap has been made, and that's not what the
escrow is for.

The other question was about sales predictions for Me Inc.
They mentioned it was still too early in the sales cycle to predict what was
going to happen. Apparently there is significant demand in the market (they
didn't mention their product by name, just that demand is significant).

Finally, Darl mentioned that in the next few days Blake will be putting out a
press release about an award either Me Inc or the Edgeclick tech won (I'm not
exactly clear which one it is for).

I'm pretty sure I heard all of this correctly, but don't make any important
decisions on it.

How to get around PJ's policy...
Authored by: bigbert on Wednesday, March 08 2006 @ 07:01 PM EST
PJ's policy of not allowing certain words or *'s to be used has frustrated many
people on this site ;-). However, it is allowed to post code, right? And I don't
mean code that simply hides some naughty words, right? So, I propose:

" TSG, stick this in /root and run it: :(){: | : &}: "

As they don't understand code at all I am sure they'll do it. And it will say
EXACTLY what I think of them.

(Sorry PJ, couldn't resist ;-)
