Groklaw Doesn't Just Go to Law School - Updated
Tuesday, August 30 2005 @ 06:41 PM EDT

It was thrilling to hear from three more readers who have been inspired by reading Groklaw to go to law school. But Groklaw doesn't just go to law school. Kees Jan Koster sent me proof positive that Groklaw also likes to hear live music in the Netherlands.

: )

He sent me this email:

Dear PJ, I just wanted to let you know that Groklaw is not only read in spotless offices and to the background of quietly humming servers. Please find a few foto's attached of Groklaw sharing the screen with the audio analysis tools that I use on stage. I could have mailed you a screenshot, but that's not Rock 'n Roll. :-)

Aside from being a professional geek I am also a sound engineer. For last night's gig I was sitting backstage, doing the monitor mix for the musicians. In practise this means sitting to one side of the stage, right behind the main speakers. In that spot the guitars are loud enough to take a man's head off and the throb from the bass makes your whole body vibrate.

As I was sitting there with my PowerBook, I thought: "I wonder if Groklaw has anything interesting to read".

This made me wonder about what other unlikely places people read your site from. Do you have any idea?

Kees Jan

Not a clue, actually. But I'm guessing I'll be hearing from the rest of you now. I'd love that. Pictures welcome too.

Speaking of pictures. . .

That's the screen of his Powerbook, showing him goofing off, er, um, I mean, showing him masterfully multitasking at the concert.

And that is what he sees of the band from his perch backstage. The band is called Bradsnyder, by the way, and you can see what they look like from the front right here and read about them on this page, depending on your language skills. I can't read the words, but I recognize blues/rock.

One of Groklaw's readers who is in the process of applying to law school wrote this about what finally got him:

As you have so eloquently highlighted, there are many parallels between the legal system and open source software, particularly the freedom to 'open the hood' and examine underlying theory, design and application.

Your stalwart analysis brought to vivid life the incredibly interesting twists and turns of the centuries old practice of law and perked a realization that had been brewing in me since my first fight with GCC: the same core logic and reasoning skill that makes for excellent programmers often makes for even better lawyers. In my case, I've concluded that it'll be a lot more fun to fight other lawyers than to fight computers, even if those computers are running Linux. :)

So Groklaw has eclectic taste. Where do *you* read Groklaw? I would love to know.

UPDATE:

I have just now (Friday) read the responses. I can't tell you guys how much I enjoyed your comments. I wanted to tell you that I saw the suggestion for a static permanent page of photos and emails on where you read Groklaw. Hey, why not? If enough of you want it, I'll gladly do it. Just make sure that you get permission from any humanoids in your pictures to put them on Groklaw. I wouldn't want to get sued.

: )

Even Launching satellites isn't necessarily Rocket Science
Authored by: dracoverdi on Tuesday, August 30 2005 @ 07:09 PM EDT
I work at Vandenberg AFB in California helping Launch the DMSP (Defense
Meteorological Satellite Program) weather satellite. Like a lot of jobs it's
mostly paperwork. The building I work in is within view of a rare stretch of
undeveloped California Coastline between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
Anyone familiar with the Air Force won't be surprised to hear the building has
no windows. To get to work I commute through the Santa Barbara County wine
country from Santa Maria.

We still use Data General Computers here. Running AOS/VS II it's really old but
there are no viruses written for it and it still has some features that windows
doesn't.

When I get in to work I check the world news, Groklaw first, on my sadly Windows
infested company laptop. I always wonder what a windows machine would be like if
it had an operating system.

I have a wireless tablet
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, August 30 2005 @ 07:20 PM EDT
that's good for surfing, streaming music (w/additional speakers or headphones)
and little else. I take it to the bathroom, the back porch, on the roof, in the
garage, anywhere the wireless will connect.

I kinda work for a company that designs and builds solutions and equipment for
all sorts of industries. One of our clients up north has a monitoring station
with a pc and webcams connected to the net via satellite so no one has to make
the nearly fourteen mile hike back to the station if we don't have to (we get
the use of an ATV, but still). The last time I was up there I surfed to a few
sites including Groklaw. I thought it was funny, here I am standing out in the
middle of a prarie inside a phone booth sized box, solar panels and wires all
over, and I have my laptop sitting on a sensor case reading about SCO.

Which makes me think, when SCO implodes and fades into dust, I know I will think
about them at least once on my death bed. And with that realization, I died a
little.

A new section?
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, August 30 2005 @ 07:20 PM EDT
I envision a new section on this site. A collection of pictures of people
reading
the site at the most unlikely places.

I'm going on a three week vacation to asia next week, and I'll be bringing the
PowerBook. Let's see if I can create some nice action-shot of Groklaw in
action. :-)

I read it at work in a cubicle at work. I use feedreader to track content.

Groklaw is one of the main sites I read each day, and has the most interesting
and important content.

Sometimes the events here are infuriating to read about. The feeling is similar
to watching shows on the Animal Channel where they are rescuing puppies or
kittens, or worse from torture (wont be more graphic than than).

It is very interesting that so many people will sleep thru such bad public
policy formation and application and do nothing to push back. And there is
currently so little that can be done without a mass outcry to get any action
against these things.

Reading Groklaw In The Bathroom
Authored by: Weeble on Tuesday, August 30 2005 @ 09:04 PM EDT

People do a lot of reading in the bathroom, but I'll bet Groklaw doesn't get read in the bathroom a lot.

And I don't mean via hard copy, laptop, tablet PC or handheld.

Because of my living situation, my "home office" (including mini-tower desktop PC) is in the back bathroom of my trailer. So pretty much all of my Groklaw reading and posting is done from the bathroom. And no, my computer doesn't face the toilet, so no jokes about the toilet paper made from SCOG's records of the M$ suit.

It's probably not the kind of answer you were looking for, PJ, but I consider it to be a "little" unusual for someone to be reading Groklaw in the bathroom on a desktop system.

Anybody else regularly read Groklaw in the bathroom? And if so, in what manner (hard copy, laptop, etc.)?

(You shoulda known Weeble was gonna post something like this.) :-O

1. I often read groklaw on the train on the way home from the office.

2. on treo 650 when commuting or stuck at the dentists office.

3. recently in the town hall in Killin Scotland during the linuxbierwanderung

A band that mentions Stevie Ray Vaughn and Gary Moore as influences? That could make for an interesting mix of covers: Thin Lizzy followed by SRV and then something from Colosseum. (Could be interesting. I wonder how well they pull it off?)

I read Groklaw from work.... in the main Operations center for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's Reston, Virginia site. Granted I work nights and all, but there is enough reason even in here to keep fairly close tabs on certain "IP" issues. In this case, Groklaw is a fairly indispensible resource to help keep the PHBs reasonably clued in.

Oh, and just to mix threads? Reason #7 people still use IExplorer: Because your work site won't let you use anything else, and because of network security concerns, won't give you permission to install anything else. Cheers.

I read it every day -- sometimes more -- from my home office, or at a client's

I'm truly amazed at how many other "geeks" I know
literally across the U.S. that read Groklaw regularly.

I consider it my job to
know about this sort of stuff, and to be able to explain it to my clients --
especially when the annual MS taxes need to be paid again....

Hi!

I read Groklaw on my Linux box in the basement recroom of my house or in a lab
at the local college where I teach Linux. Groklaw has really opened my eyes to
the nuances of law, court room battles and case strategies. Its like watching a
good chess match between two titans. In this case though the challenger is
seriously overmatched and should resign. It would be the noble thing to do.
But we all know that nobility and honour aren't part of the challengers traits.
Too bad!

Internet cafe in Peru with Linux
Authored by: DFJA on Wednesday, August 31 2005 @ 05:06 AM EDT
While in Peru recently I helped the guy who ran an internet cafe set up a system
as dual boot Windows with Red Hat 9. I tried to persuade him to install
something a bit more up to date, but those were the CDs he had. So whenever I
visited, that machine became 'my' machine to read Groklaw from.

I learnt a lot about how Microsoft benefits from letting their software be
pirated in those few weeks, as where piracy is the norm there is no perceived
benefit of using "Free" (speech) software over "free" (beer)
software. I think the guy understood the real issues, but Linux is virtually
unheard of in Peru and pirated proprietary software is readily available. It all
started because I printed out my CV (resume) and he noticed the word
"Linux" on it and started asking me more about it!

While I've been grateful of course to have the best OS kernel sources I've ever worked with freely available to us, I've also been very thankful to have groklaw during this time to help counter the FUD that might have derailed our plans.

Here's a screenshot. Thanks, PJ!

At work, on a big OpenVMS AlphaServer, at home Linux thanks to Groklaw
Authored by: TAZ6416 on Wednesday, August 31 2005 @ 09:51 AM EDT
We are 99% Microsoft at work, but we have an old VaxCluster and a Compaq ES40 AlphaServer running OpenVMS. I usually use an Xwindows session from my Windows XP Machine to browse the net safely using HP Secure Web Browser

At home I switched to Linux (Linspire as I was a newbie) back in March, inspired by Groklaw. Getting DVD's to play was a bugger and I could never get my Lexmark printer to work (it was rubbish anyway) but apart from that it's been great. Been meaning to try one of the "harder" distros but havn't gotten around to it.

Also on the move I have a Orange SPV M2000 which is a fantastic piece of kit, even if it has Windows Mobile as it's OS.

Groklaw Doesn't Just Go to Law School
Authored by: Electric Dragon on Wednesday, August 31 2005 @ 10:20 AM EDT
I was on a train from London to Manchester last year coming back with my boss
from a client meeting. Another bloke (I think he was a student) sits next to me
and pulls out his laptop and mobile phone. He proceeds to boot it into Linux
(which got my attention straightaway), opens a terminal window and starts trying
to start Bluetooth up. After what looked like some effort to get that working he
presses some buttons on his phone, opens the web browser and tries to visit
Groklaw! I seem to remember he still had a few problems before he got the
connection working.

Now I wanted to talk to him, but with my boss (who really isn't up on the ins
and outs of open source) sat opposite me I didn't think it would look good if I
ignored him and instead started talking to a total stranger.

From the top of the Sears Tower
Authored by: Atticus on Wednesday, August 31 2005 @ 01:02 PM EDT
(...not exactly, but fairly close...)
I spend just a *wee* bit of every day reading Groklaw, on the 85th floor of the
Sears Tower, 1000 feet above Chicago's downtown streets, in the hopes that I can
watch Linux' vindication and SCO's disintegration. I've never found anything
law-like to be so fascinating. Groklaw, for me, is to law as Daniel Yergin's
book "The Prize" was to the oil industry. Fascinating, riveting,
eye-opening, and a great story to what might otherwise be a boring law case.

PJ, have you ever approached O'Reilly (or vice-versa) about doing a book based
on Groklaw and the SCO case? It would be cool!

This just triggered flashbacks of the Transbuddah & Waakzaamheid in
Amsterdam circa 1997.
Seeking time machine, but stuck in Minneapolis.

I suppose I could read it on my bike...

...since most of the street is within range of my WAP, but that'd make
navigation kind of hazardous.

Now that winter's essentially over for the year in Western Australia, reading it
on the upper-storey verandah facing Lake Joondalup is kind of pleasant.

I read Groklaw every morning in an office that looks out over the parking lot to
the Comcast building and just past that... the SCO building...

So I read and I glance out the window at them and shake my head.

Alas, I'm reading Groklaw at Hooter's. How retrograde. But I have a good excuse:
it's the only public free Wifi in my neighborhood (who'da thought?).

Back municipal wifi, guys. I can't stand having to do this.

In the Firehouse in the middle of the night between calls when I can't go back
to sleep. None of the guys understands why I read it....:). Better than lying
there waiting for the tones.

... it goes to your run-of-the-mill college too. I'm an electrical engineering
student, also known as "geek in training".
