No Daemon, GNU, Penguin Until Next Week
Thursday, April 28 2005 @ 11:08 AM EDT

This is just to let you know that the next installment of Peter H. Salus' The Daemon, the GNU and the Penguin will be next Thursday. He has been to three conferences in the last two weeks, and he's just too busy this week. Here is his message to you he asked me to post:

No installment of The daemon, the gnu and the penguin this week.

I'm sorry, but with three conferences (plus travel) in two weeks, I've been too busy. As I wrote earlier, the next installment will concern 1979.

I also know from his communication to me that he has done an interview of interest at the USENIX conference, which resulted in new information to add to the chapter dealing with 1979, so he's rewriting. I believe it will be worth the wait. Conferences are wonderful for interfacing with birds of a feather. And I'm so proud Groklaw is publishing Dr. Salus' book.

*Not publishing* "The Daemon, the GNU and the Penguin" is *MY*
intellectual property. I'm going to sue you for $5 Billion!

I have millions and millions of lines that aren't D,G&P in a briefcase
somewhere in Germany! And I'll need a copy of everything you never wrote just
to prove it!

And please do include links where appropriate, like this:
course, don't forget to set the post mode to html, and check the Preview to see
that it all works. That way, it helps to keep Groklaw as a nice, tidy,
efficient, functional site, which is what we all want.

Somebody's been griping about errors that he's found in previous chapters. Does
Peter have a plan for reviewing and making any necessary corrections on these or
other issues? If so, when will they be published?

Also, when the book is finalized, will there be a link in the frame to the
book?

Enquiring minds want to know!

No Daemon, GNU, Penguin Until Next Week

PJ,
I have copies of "Unix Programmer's Manual" Sixth Edition, dated May,
1975 as mentioned in an earlier chapter of this wonderful history, and the
companion volume "Setting Up Unix" Sixth Edition. From a sysadmin's
viewpoint, I find the companion volume the more interesting of the two. Chapter
1 is filled with my handwritten notes made during the hand to hand combat
required to get the distribution working on an early (Serial #15 as I remember)
PDP 11/45.

If the Groklaw community feels these are of any historic interest and need to be
preserved, I will donate them to a suitable home where they will be cared for
and available to the public. I will accept PJ's recommendation about if and
where they should go.

Thanks folks!

Saw Dr. Salus at Penguicon 3.0 this past weekend in Novi, MI. He did a fine job
with Geek Jeopardy, though it looked like there wasn't much in the way of
preparation for the event, it was mostly Dr. Salus and Eugene "Rod"
Roddenberry tossing questions at a panel of three people pulled from the
audience. It was pretty funny, though.

This is not an IP issue....

You folks are ALL wrong about this being an IP issue. NO.. this is an issue
about who Dr. Salus REALLY is. Is he who he says he is??? Just because he's
appeared in public repeatedly doesn't prove anything; maybe that person's just
a stand in for the REAL Dr. Salus, who is actually an anonymous, unassuming
journalist with a paralegal background!

(Sorry PJ, couldn't resist!)
Matt
