You'll recall that back in
May, there was a conference in Canada on "Open Source and Free Software: Concepts, Controversies,
and Solutions", and I mentioned that they had a system called ePresence, which makes it possible to view presentations and search them with keywords. The ePresence system (soon to be released as open
source) is now available to use to watch an edited version of the three-day conference. You can see “Open Source as a Social Movement” Part 1, a talk by Professor
Eben Moglen and questions with the full panel afterward and Part 2 by
Brian Behlendorf and Rishab Ghosh. You'll find all the talks listed with descriptions here.
For example, here is a description of Mr. Ghosh's presentation:
"Ghosh presents on the international FLOSS survey done for the European Union. He indicates some of the reasons why Free/Libre and Open Source Software is useful to communities, and illustrates these points with the inspirational success story of Extremadura."
The email I got from EDTI, University of Toronto, explaining it says this about ePresence: "Viewing the archives
with ePresence you can: watch synchronized video and slide presentations
shown just as they happened at the conference; watch presentations from
start to finish, or navigate through them with a table of contents and a
timeline; search the presentations for keywords that appeared in slides; and
join threaded discussions in a conference Forum."

Speaking of online events, the Yankee Group is at it again, with another online survey about Linux and Windows and indemnification and how Windows users feel about life. I'm not suggesting you take the survey, what with privacy issues and all, but I thought it was interesting to see the questions being asked this time. Here's one:

- Yes, we will get indemnification from our Linux distributor
- No
- We will customize our code base and therefore will purchase Linux Indemnification insurance from a third party supplier
- No, we'll take the risk and go without
Sunset says anyone can do an online survey, by the way. At the bottom of the page, there is the offer. I note that the links to Customer Testimonials and Customer List are broken, so it'd be living dangerously, but the sample surveys are working. Here's my suggestion for an online survey on why people stop using Microsoft products:
1. If you plan on switching to Linux, will you be leaving Windows because of the following?
- Microsoft's helping to fund SCO's attack on Linux
- Microsoft's anti-competitive business practices
- I'm sick of viruses and security problems
- Their insidious one-sided licenses
- I wish to avoid an integrated software environment
- I'm sick of Microsoft treating me like a dope -- next time, tell me about all the open ports
- Nah. There will be no next time -- Microsoft lost my trust
